Bonny blue een
The girl is putting together a paper and a diorama for her poetry class. She and I had a lot of fun making a rice-stuffed doll. She did the rest entirely herself (although as a surprise, I'm going to make a shield for her fallen knight tonight.) We may have reached new lows, or highs, depending, of family weirdness as we both really like the doll. Even though it has no legs. And looks wounded. And is creepy.
She has ravens, a nest, and everything. We used corn silk for the hair, and painted two buttons with blue nail polish (doesn't everyone have blue nail polish just laying around the house?) for the eyes.
Her subject:
Twa Corbies! (Anonymous, from bartleby.com)
| AS I was walking all alane | |
| I heard twa corbies making a mane: | |
| The tane unto the tither did say, | |
| 'Whar sall we gang and dine the day?' | |
| '—In behint yon auld fail dyke | 5 |
| I wot there lies a new-slain knight; | |
| And naebody kens that he lies there | |
| But his hawk, his hound, and his lady fair. | |
| 'His hound is to the hunting gane, | |
| His hawk to fetch the wild-fowl hame, | 10 |
| His lady 's ta'en anither mate, | |
| So we may mak our dinner sweet. | |
| 'Ye'll sit on his white hause-bane, | |
| And I'll pike out his bonny blue e'en: | |
| Wi' ae lock o' his gowden hair | 15 |
| We'll theek our nest when it grows bare. | |
| 'Mony a one for him maks mane, | |
| But nane sall ken whar he is gane: | |
| O'er his white banes, when they are bare, | |
| The wind sall blaw for evermair.' |
Whether the doll is weirdly, creepy-cute, or just plain wrong, that was about the best quality time the girl and I have had to spend together in quite awhile.

Proud to be a Mom

Wow. It's a whole new month!
Here, at last, are pics of the girl just before she went to the prom. The extra string by her neck is from her purse--I couldn't get her to hang out for pics very long because she was in quite a hurry to get out the door. I think I may have overdone it in the fussing department.
She had a wonderful time, and even danced with a boy.
I don't know who will look back on this night more fondly--the girl, or me.
The boy is visiting for Mother's Day. I sure miss having him home. I love having him here on Mom's day, and I feel totally pampered. He helped me a ton around the garden. The girl helped too, but not much. Rain and thunder drove her off and she never came back.
Peas are in, artichokes and cardoon (hardened off seedlings that are under a protective cover until things nice'n up) and the onion sets which couldn't wait any longer. I think the onion sets will be fine, since some onions that overwintered have plenty of green on them.
Cake, gardening, crystalline gifts, and a good talk with my mom this morning. Awesome day. It'll be hard to go back to work tomorrow after being spoiled rotten all day. I'm so proud of my kids, and spending time with them was a huge treat.
Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! I hope you had a good one.

Latest farm pics

The goats are all fattened up and ready for a long winter. They put on more wool and more fat than other years. I think they know something we don't ...We had just a couple of inches of snow, much of which got melted by rain. Today I got to enjoy one of my favorite sorts of days: patches of sunlight and clouds, no wind, golden light on snow, blue sky shining through icicles, and occasional bouts of snow coming from silver and white puffballs floating overhead.
The chickens spent most of their day sunning themselves by the house. When a particularly dark cloud went overhead, the roosters all crowed, and then crowed again when the sun came back. They worked great as an alarm so I knew when it was time to head out and take a little walk around the garden.
They got frozen grapes for a treat. I hadn't meant to freeze them--I just missed a few bunches, and since half the bright yellow leaves have now fallen off the grapes (the leaves are falling off the beech tree like rain now that we've had some serious cold) I discovered them.
Not pictured: Brian and Finn chasing each other around the yard in the snow. Beautiful white fluffy dogs enjoying the perfect day.
